£300 a Week for Young Man
A contract just signed by Mr. Alfred Hitchcock, whose age is only 28, with British National Pictures, means that he will receive a salary rising to £17,000 a year (over £300 a week) as a film director. This is claimed to be a record for the British film industry.
Mr. Hitchcock started work in an advertising office as 12s. a week. At the age of 18 he earned £10 weekly by designing film sub-titles. Among the best known pictures which he has made are "Downhill," "Easy Virtue," "The Pleasure Garden," "The Mountain Eagle," "The Lodger," and "The Ring," which will be shown next week at the Astoria.
