Introduction

The British Board of Film Classification is responsible for rating films in the United Kingdom.

Ratings

The current range of BBFC certificates are:

Symbol Name Definition
Uc Universal Children Suitable for all, but especially suitable for children from the age of 2 to 6 to watch on their own (video & DVD only).
U Universal Suitable for all
PG Parental Guidance All ages admitted, but parents are advised that certain scenes may be unsuitable for children under 8
12A 12 Accompanied/Advisory Suitable for those aged 12 and over (cinema only); under 12s are only admitted if accompanied by an adult. Effectively replaced "12" for cinematic ratings circa 2002.
12 12 Suitable for those aged 12 and over (video & DVD only). Was used for cinematic ratings before 2002.
15 15 Suitable for those aged 15 and over
18 18 Suitable for those aged 18 and over
R18 Restricted 18 Suitable for those aged 18 and over and only available at licensed cinemas and sex shops

Universal (1913-1970)

Old u.gif Universal, suitable for children (used between 1913 and 1970)

Adult (1913-1970)

Old a.gif Adult (used between 1913 and 1970)

X (1951-1970)

Old x.gif only suitable for those aged 16 and over (used between 1951 and 1970)

A (1970-1982)

Bbfc1970A.png suitable for those aged 5 and over admitted, but parents advised that they may not wish children under 14 to watch the film (used between 1970 and 1982)

X (1970-1982)

Bbfc1970X.png only suitable for those aged 18 and over (used between 1970 and 1982)
