The Paradine Case Alfred Hitchcock; USA 1947; PT; £9.99; B/W; Certificate U

This David Selznick-scripted potboiler is as much a study in hubris as a conventional courtroom drama. Gregory Peck's dapper, conceited barrister is defending the beautiful Mrs Paradine (Alida C. Valli), accused of murdering her husband. As he becomes bewitched by her, his judgement is douded and he puts his own marriage at risk. His uncertainty is matched by that of Hitchcock, who struggles to rise above such hackneyed source material. Digitally remastered. (MFB No. 182)
