New British Films

The Elstree studios are full of activity just now, with five directors at work. Alfred Hitchcock is making good progress with "Champagne" — his first attempt at directing Betty Balfour — and Thomas Bentley is reported to be doing well with "The Cassilis Engagement." Monty Banks, the Italian-American comedian, is hard at work on "Adam's Apples," his first British picture. All these three films are British International productions. Mr. Anthony Asquith has been working at Elstree for about a fortnight on "Underground," the farcical melodrama of London life, which he is making for British Instructional. This is his first attempt at single-handed direction. Finally Mr. Victor Saville is near the end of his first Burlington film called "Tesha," in which Maria Corda and Jameson Thomas have the leading parts. After this he has arranged to produce a version of Mr. Warwick Deeping's novel, "Kitty."
