Alfred Hitchcock (b. 1860)

Biography

Greengrocer and fishmonger Alfred Hitchcock married widow Emma Gallop in 1888 and they had one child together, named Alfred Charles. Emma had three children from her previous marriage to George Joseph Gollop.

By 1891, Alfred had opened a fishmongery & poultrery on Bermondsey New Road (later to be renamed Tower Bridge Road) which he ran until it was consumed into his brother's expanding business — John Hitchcock Ltd., Fishmongers & Poulterers — in the early 1920s. By 1930, his nephew William John Hitchcock had taken over the shop and remained there until it was damaged by bombing during the Second World War.

In January 1894, he was fined £5 plus costs by Southwark Police Court for "exposing for sale ten geese which were unfit for the food of man".[1]

Emma died in 1903 and widower Alfred remarried in 1913 to florist Elizabeth Amelia Welch, daughter of fruiterer John Welch.

He died in 1926 aged 66, leaving an estate worth a considerable £18,334 11s. 6d.[2] In his Last Will and Testament, he left most of his estate to his son, Alfred Charles.

Alfred Hitchcock is buried at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Leytonstone.

Probate

The executors of Alfred's Last Will and Testament were his brother John and local fishmonger William John Lees (b. ~1864).[32]

Research Notes

  • Biographer Patrick McGilligan notes "Of the director’s namesake, William’s brother Alfred, not much is known, except that he was a bulwark of the family business. Alfred was to run a fish shop on busy Tower Bridge Road, immediately south of the Thames, and spearhead the London side of operations."
  • The 1921 Electoral Registry shows Alfred and Alfred Charles living at 23 Jerningham Road with Elizabeth Hitchcock (wife of Alfred and step-mother of Alfred Charles).
  • "A. Hitchcock" was listed as the owner of the fishmongery at 79 Bermondsey New Road as late as 1920. By 1923, the shop had been consumed into "John Hitchcock Ltd., Fishmongers & Poulterers". It looks likely that, by then, Alfred was living at 23 Jerningham Road SE14.[33]
  • The Essex Standard reported on 18/Oct/1884 that "Arthur Wilson (16), labourer, and Wm. Good (37), stevedor, were indicted for stealing a gelding of Alfred Hitchcock, from the marshes, at West Ham, on September 4th." The Essex Newsman (18/Oct/1884) added, "Wilson pleased guilty, and was sentenced to six month's hard labour. No evidence was offered against Good."
