Jerningham Road, New Cross, London

(Redirected from Jerningham Road)

Jerningham Road is a residential street in the New Cross district of south London and is part of London Borough of Lewisham.

Although there has been some redevelopment on the road, both of the properties linked to the Hitchcocks remain.

23 Jerningham Road

Archive records indicate that Alfred Hitchcock (uncle of film director Alfred Hitchcock) purchased 23 Jerningham Road around 1921, meaning his family no longer had to live above their shop at 79 Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey.[1]

When Alfred died in 1926, the property passed to his son, Alfred Charles.

149 Jerningham Road

By the time Alfred Charles wrote his Last Will and Testament in 1936, he had moved to number 149. At the time of his death in 1944, he was living with his uncle John Silvester Hitchcock at 11 Campion Road, Putney.
